SCARLET GREEN-WINGED MACAW
Ara Chloroptera

When someone mentions Ara parrots, the first thing that comes to a mind are parrots from book and movies about Robinson Crusoe. However, many of you may not know that all Ara species belong to family Psittacidae, that is divided into four genera:

a)  ANDORHYNCHUS- genus of Blue Ara containing three species: Sea-blue Ara, Hyacinth-Big blue Ara and dwarf blue Ara.

b)  CYANOPSITTA – this genus has only one species, and that is Spix Ara, which is in the biggest danger of extinguishing, as there is only one living male in the wild.

c) Ara - this genus once had 16 species, but now four of them are extinguished. The other 12 have several subspecies. Parrots from this genus are specific as for their size and colorings.

d) DIOPSITTACA- this genus has only one species and that is Blue-fronted dwarf Ara.
Aras are the largest parrot species. The size can vary from Blue-headed dwarf Ara, which is only 30 cm long, to Scarlet Ara that reaches more than 1 m size. Beside these extremes, all other species are 50 to 80 cm long. General characteristics of all Aras are large body, variety in color, long pointed tail. Cheeks are featherless, even though some of them have very fine and tiny feathers on the cheeks. There are social and easy to tame. In the wild, they inhabit land of South America , mostly jungles.

When it comes to Scarlet Green –winged Ara Macaw, one should know that this is the biggest parrot species of all, and it can reach up 90 or even 110 cm. They inhibit eastern Panama , Columbia , Venezuela , Brazil , northern and eastern Bolivia , Paraguay and northern Argentina , ascending to a height of up to 2000 meters. Nesting take place high above the ground in the hollow of trees. Eggs are laid in spring time, just before rainy season. it is very often that natives-Indians take the nestling and tame them. In adequate conditions, with proper diet, they can live 60 to 80 years. Because of the life expansively they can learn to imitate lots of words , various tunes and melodies.

Basic color of this Macaw is scarlet, while the shoulders are green. Lower back and rump are blue, and cheeks are white with few red feathers. The size of the wing is up to 41 cm. Small, medium and inner laterals are green on the outer side, and on the inner side they are blue. The iris is light yellow. The beak is strong, powerful and 10 cm long. Upper mandible is beige, while the lower is grey-black. Legs are dark grey, and the claws are black. This species does not have subspecies, and as well as other Macaws, there are no mutations either.

Breeders should provide roomy cage made of strong wire. The pair can be kept in outdoor aviary with winter shelter. These birds should always have enough fresh twigs for nibbling. Wooden barrel or hollow tree trunk should be provided for nesting. The female lays two eggs measuring 50 by 36 mm and sits on them for about 4 weeks. During the incubation period, the relative humidity of the air must be about 85 percent. To achieve this the layer of sawdust and peat in the nest is moistened and a hay with water is situated underneath the nesting cup. While the nestlings are being fed, the following mixture should be served: a cup of wheat groats, 2 egg yolk and 2 tablespoons of powdered milk are mixed and cooked; one part of bananas and one part of curds are added to six parts of this mixture, together with half-ripe maze germinating corn, vitamins and minerals. The young are fed by both parents, and begin feeding on their own after 3 months.

When knowing all these, how complex is mating and making food mixture for the chicks, than the high price is not a surprise. Hand-feeding is also very complex, too, as the chicks must be fed on every 3 hours. In the first period they should get the food trough the tube, and later trough the syringe, right down to the crop. Both tube and syringe must be warmed up to 42 degrees as that is the temperature of the food provided by the real mother. As you can see, all this is not easy at all, so higher price for hand-fed young Green-winged Macaw is quite OK.

These birds are very friendly and easy to tame. They soon allow one to handle it, and starts eating from ones mouth. All in all, breeders are the one who fed and brought them up, so why would they be reserved towards people?

Both sexes have the same colorings, but the male have bigger head and beak than the female. This difference in size is notable only at adult, sexually matured birds. Young birds have shorter tail, lower mandible as well as part of mandible is pale grey at the base, and the iris is brown.

As a pet, Green-winged Macaw usually kept singly, as this is the best way to tame and teach newly imported bird. A well-tamed bird can be kept on the perch indoors, and in the summer in a garden. It will choose its favorite person, because of its personality the choice will be made over the voice or looks of the person. The chosen one will have privileges and the bird will allow all kind of torture over it, while the others won't have any privileges. Off course this does not stand for the hand-fed bird!!!

In captivity they should be fed on sunflower, oat, millet, hemp, bright seed, sorghum, fruit, vegetables and greens. Their favorite fruits are palm fruits so treat them with bananas, pineapple or orange.

On the ground they are very clumsy, while the branches are their court. They are great flyers and in the wild, they can fly for several hundreds kilometers in search for clay, which they consume in the early morning. The clay helps them clean their organism from toxic materials from unripe fruits.

As you see on these photos, this is the most attractive parrot species. Because of its life span it will become the most childish member of your family always ready for games and good chit-chat. Never forget PARROT IS NOT A TOY!!!

They never take anyone for granted, they don't like bullies, noise, fast and sudden moves.

REMEMBER: All parrots are living beings and each of them, no matter the species it belongs, has its own personality. Parrots are not just a birds. They are loyal, friendly communicative, in other words they are dogs covered with feather!!!
